Table Legs

When we were first formed, we exclusively manufactured hairpin legs. But over the years we have developed more designs to suit a range of styles and applications. Our hairpin legs are still offered in an extensive range of sizes and colours, but if you are looking to make a table or bench then we have many other designs available too.

A hairpin leg is a slim, steel rod, bent into a V shape. Hairpin legs can be attached to almost any flat surface to make it a table. The design of the hairpin was a mid-century classic, originally designed during the wartime era when there were material shortages. The shape was an efficient, sleek and sturdy one that can hold heavy-duty tabletops. These kinds of industrial table legs are favoured by many because they are versatile. They are also practical; they are designed to hold a lot of weight and last a long time. As well as this, they are very easy to fit and so are popular with DIY enthusiasts.

Another popular leg style is industrial box section legs. These are generally used in pairs and are considered a heavier duty option, suitable for very large tables and benches. You can also use them for smaller tables but we would suggest not going any less than 150 x 75cm.

Our table legs are very easy to attach and take off. They all come provided with build guides and screws. This means that, when you buy hairpin legs or other kinds of table legs, you will have everything you need for our whole project.

The best way to assemble hairpin legs is by laying your tabletop upside down. After this, it is time to position the legs and screw them on. In most cases, our supplied screws will be suitable for any DIY project. However, if you are making a very large table with a thick top it makes sense to try and maximise the length of screw used for extra stability. Size #8 - #12 wood screws are ideal in this case. The base plates used on all of our legs are 4 - 5mm thick, so an optimum screw length would be the same as your top thickness, leaving 4 - 5mm space overall.

Additionally, if you plan to add and remove legs often from a table (more than 20 times over its life) then metal threaded inserts can be a great addition to your build.

Legs in sets of 4 (e.g. hairpin legs or single pins) should generally be placed at the corners of the table. We suggest placing a set of 4 table legs so the tips of the leg sit about 5cm from the edge of the table.

When placing legs in sets of 2 (e.g. box section legs) think about chair position. For sets of 2 legs, you should think about how you want your chairs to fit around the table. When using chairs at the ends of the table, the legs should be approximately 40cm inset. If you are not placing chairs then you can fit the legs anywhere up to the very edge.

If you are making a home office desk to go against a wall, you may also prefer to put two of the legs further in. This will provide more room to move your chair in and fit your legs under the desk. Some table designs also use less than four table legs. For instance, if you are making a coffee or side table that has a round top, you might only want to use three hairpin legs.

Ultimately, where you place your legs on a table depends on how you want the final piece of furniture to look, and also what you'll be using it for. The best advice to follow is to play around with different variations when attaching your legs. Do this by attaching the legs using two screws which you can easily remove. Then, when you're happy, use more screws to attach.

With any DIY project, there is more to consider than simply the strength of one component. Our legs are all extremely strong but only as strong as the fittings used and the structural integrity and construction of the tabletop. Always exercise caution when building a table. If you are planning to build a very heavy table, always seek professional advice and complete suitable testing before final use.

Our steel hairpin legs come in both standard and heavy-duty versions and are made using solid steel. The smaller legs will be stronger by nature and using 3 rod legs adds significant strength. Longer legs are more susceptible to flex and wobble. For this reason, we suggest using 3-rod hairpin legs

If you are using hairpin legs to make a coffee table, you may be asking "how much should a coffee table overhang?". Generally, the rim of a coffee table should 'hang' over the legs by at least 5cm, though many people opt for up to 10cm.

Dining table legs need to be tall enough for people to sit comfortably at a table and eat/work. Generally, the best length for a dining table leg is about 28’’/71cm; our standard length for dining table legs. This allows for top thicknesses of 20-50mm to achieve a top surface height of 29-30’’, or 73-76cm. However, if you are building a countertop that you intend to use as a breakfast bar or kitchen island, they could be up to 34 -40’’ (86-101cm) long.

The beauty of hairpin legs is that, with a few screws, they can be attached to almost any type of wooden top that is thick enough to span the required table size. Popular choices for wooden table tops to go with hairpin legs include: Solid Oak: A classic pale golden hardwood with excellent strength and a medium-coarse grain. Reclaimed Scaffolding boards: Full of rustic industrial character and often great value. Walnut: A dark hardwood, very strong and synonymous with luxury. Ash: A popular hardwood for furniture makers, a light colour with a smooth coarse grain. Birch Ply: A layered composite board with great strength and distinctive layered edge detail. Great strength, perfect for structural use.
